Hurricane Readiness

Hurricane Prep Guide Readiness.jpg

Another hurricane season is upon us and with it comes lots of anxiety. If you’ve been through one (or several) you know how stressful before, during and after can be. Having these necessities at the ready helps to ease my mind.

Headlamps- If and when the power goes out, you may need your hands free for other things, particularly if you have kids. These are very useful. Energizer- Single Pack // GearLight Double Pack

More flashlights because dark + water is scary. Rayovac Floating LED Lantern // 4-Pack of Mini LED Lights

Portable chargers come in handy year round, but we are always sure to keep ours fully charged during hurricane season. These are great because when the power goes out, you can still charge your cell phone so you’ll have a way to call someone in case of an emergency. We have the Anker PowerCore, but there are lots of other options.

Wet Ones because if you do have to evacuate, things can get yucky. For example, my parents were transported from one evacuation place to another IN A DUMP TRUCK! (Because big wheels are the only things that could make it through the water at that point.) And also, sanitizer…lots of sanitizer.

Batteries- Once you have your supplies, see what size batteries you need and STOCK UP! Hopefully they won’t be needed and you can use them for other, more fun things in the future.

First Aid Kit- No real explanation needed. Whether it’s a band-aid, alcohol swab, gauze or cream you need, you’ll have a little bit of everything. There are dozens of options here.

Other useful items:

Car Escape Tools for breaking a window or cutting a seatbelt.

Whistles for helping rescuers locate your house.

Floaties for kiddos.

Emergency Weather Radio with hand crank.

Disclaimer—-I am not an expert on hurricane preparedness. This is just a list of items that were useful to my family when we had to evacuate our home due to rising water. I sincerely hope that you will never need a hurricane kit but it is comforting to be prepared.
