May Book Review
I’ve got 5 books for you this month! From light to incredibly deep, I hope you’ll find something that fits your mood this month!
Heart Bones- Once again Colleen Hoover does not disappoint! Beyah is the product of a one night stand…an adict mother and an absentee (out of state) father. When an unexpected death occurs after Beyah’s senior year of high school, she has no other option than to contact her father who has no idea how terrible Beyah’s childhood circumstances have been. She meets a neighbor at her father’s beach house and they hit it off right off the bat although they come from completely different walks of life. They agree that this will be a fun summer fling because each of the 2 have plans that begin in August. But…can they do that??? I loved this story. The plot was unexpected and Beyah’s journey to finally feel loved for the first time in her life was heartwarming and hopeful. I really enjoyed this book. Hope you do too!
All the Ugly and Wonderful Things- I know from reading other peoples’ reviews that this book is polarizing, but I am so glad I read it. We meet the main character, Wavy when she is a young girl—neglected by her parents who are addicts. She meets one of her father's employees and they form a relationship that we follow for over a dozen years. Here is what I think…it was horrifying, hopeful, thought provoking, uncomfortable, endearing, heartbreaking, maddening…SO MANY FEELINGS! It is definitely not a light read but I think it is eye opening on multiple levels and am happy that I read it. It is one I will not soon forget.
In Five Years- Ok, this one is difficult because I loved it…really couldn’t put it down, but I didn’t love the ending. This story is about the friendship of Dannie and Bella. The two met when they were young girls and grew up as close as sisters. Dannie is very driven and is successful in work which, besides Bella, is her top priority. Bella is a free spirit…she goes where the wind blows her, falls in love easily and lives for the moment. We meet boyfriends/fiances of the two and follow the relationships. I really admired the love the girls had for each other and also really like both of their significant others. There is a big twist in the middle of the story that I didn’t see coming but I was ok with it. All in all, I really enjoyed 95% of the book. I’m glad I read it and think it would be a good one for a book club. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve read it!
The Marriage Lie- If you like suspense books, I think you’ll like this one. Iris and Will have been happily married for 7 years. One day, Will is traveling for work and Iris gets notified that he was on the flight that went down. But…it doesn’t add up. He wasn’t heading to Seattle, he was off to Florida where he was scheduled to be a speaker at a conference. Will even sent Iris the flyer for the conference. Iris cannot and will not believe that Will was on that flight and she is determined to prove that there would be no reason for him to go to Seattle. But is there??? Can’t wait to hear what you think of this one!
One to Watch- If you’re a Bachelor fan, this will be a fun read for you. Plus-size fashion blogger Bea Schumacher is a big fan of hit reality show Main Squeeze. After one episode and maybe one too many glasses of wine, Bea’s social media post about how ridiculous it is that the show makes it seem like being a size 0 is a prerequisite for being able to find love, a rep for the show reaches out to Bea to become the next Main Squeeze! Bea eventually agrees under the stipulation that she will not actually find love but will do it for ratings of the show and her own career. And off we go…fantasy dates, kiss off ceremonies, tough conversations, total jerks, producer interference and actual connections. It’s a fun summer read!
