Run for a Cause- Herren Project

Last month I ran the Boston Marathon and shared the story below. Today I was accepted to run the Berlin Marathon with Team Herren Project in September. I am so grateful for the connections made through running and the running community and also for this opportunity to run for a cause! If you are able and willing to donate, please know that even a single dollar is appreciated and useful and that together we can make a difference. And if you are unable to donate, please share about the Herren Project because someone you know just might need to hear about it. =)

Something I love about running (besides the positive effect on my mental health and the finish line) is that you meet some truly inspirational people in the running world. On Monday, we were loaded onto school busses and driven 26 miles out of Boston to the starting line. I sat down by a friendly looking lady and a few miles into the ride I said, "Is this your first Boston Marathon too?" She said, "No, this will be my 14th Boston and 70th marathon." I said, "What?!?!" She laughed and then told me that that day was extra special to her because it marked 70 marathons and was also the anniversary of 17 years of sobriety for her. Incredible! I asked a few questions trying not to sound too nosey but also blown away by those numbers! Turns out she was inspired by the 30 for 30 documentary featuring Chris Herren and when their paths crossed, everything fell perfectly into place and she now works for The Herren Project which is a national nonprofit that provides resources and support for the treatment, recovery and prevention of substance use disorder. When I got home, I read all about The Herren Project and really just wanted to share it with you all because it is a great organization that you may not have known about. Hopefully you and your loved ones will never need the support of this group but if you ever feel the urge to make a charitable contribution, this is a worthwhile cause.
