Favorite Picture Books
Back to school means back to our nighttime routine (which is far from rigid in the summer). We have accumulated LOTS of picture books over the years but the kids and I scoured the shelves and named these our TOP TEN!!!
TOP TEN, in no particular order:
The Circus Ship by Chris Van Dusen- “When a circus ship runs aground off the coast of Maine, the poor animals are left on their own to swim the chilly waters. The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant- “The relatives' station wagon: it smelled like a real car, looked like a rainbow, and was roomy enough for a crowd. Lucky! I Am a Cat by Galia Bernstein- “A simple housecat named Simon encounters some bigger cats: Lion, Puma, Panther, Tiger, and Cheetah. Each of the big cats has something to say about Simon not being “cat” enough. According to them, he just doesn’t measure up. He doesn’t have Lion’s mane or Cheetah’s spots. Herman’s Vacation by Ted Percival- Looks like it may be out of stock but it if comes back, you’ll want to scoop it up! “Herman and Henry, best friends forever, are camping in the great outdoors--and they couldn't be having more fun! Well, at least Herman is enjoying all of the tent building, marshmallow roasting, and postcard writing. Henry doesn't quite seem to get the hang of any of it. Herman hates seeing his best friend so sad. So he decides to plot a very secret, very special surprise and do whatever it takes to make sure Henry has the best vacation ever! This fabulously funny story about friends who stick together is chronicled through vibrant illustrations and lift-the-flaps.”
Puddle by Hyewon Yum- “One rainy day, a little boy is upset because he can't go out and play. His mom comes up with a way to keep him entertained--by drawing a picture of herself and him going outside, playing in the rain, and splashing in a giant puddle. They have so much fun drawing themselves that they decide to venture out and make the most of the rainy weather.”
The Book Hog by Greg Pizzoi- “The Book Hog loves books -- the way they look, the way they feel, the way they smell--and he'll grab whatever he can find. There's only one problem: he can't read! A Sick Day for Amos Magee by Philip Stead- “The Best Sick Day Ever and the animals in the zoo feature in this striking picture book debut. Friends come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. In Amos McGee’s case, all sorts of species, too! Every day he spends a little bit of time with each of his friends at the zoo, running races with the tortoise, keeping the shy penguin company, and even reading bedtime stories to the owl. Leonardo, the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems- “Leonardo is truly a terrible monster-terrible at being a monster that is. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to frighten anyone. Determined to succeed, Leonardo sets himself to training and research. Finally, he finds a nervous little boy, and scares the tuna salad out of him! Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes- “Lilly loves all sorts of things. She loves school, she loves dressing up, she even grows to love her stinky baby brother, Julius.
