October Book Club

October is HERE! After reading and enjoying Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin last month, I checked to see what else Zevin had written and came across The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry which has really great reviews on Amazon! This one was published in 2014 so it is definitely the oldest book I’ve chosen for the club but hopefully not too many of you have read it yet so that we can all enjoy it together!

“A. J. Fikry’s life is not at all what he expected it to be. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. But when a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, its unexpected arrival gives Fikry the chance to make his life over--and see everything anew.”

Questions:

1) A. J. has some very specific thoughts on what he will and will not read at the beginning of the book. His preferences broaden as the book progresses and he even starts stocking a wider range of books. Are you more similar to beginning of the book A. J. or end of the book A. J.? Have your preferences evolved? Are you a mood-reader?

2) What do you think led A. J. to adopt Maya?

3) Were you surprised about who Maya’s biological father was or did you see it coming?

4) We hear Maya’s version of her mother’s last day as well as Ismay’s version. Do you tend to believe one is more accurate than the other?

5) A. J. is firmly anti e-readers. What are your thoughts on them?

6) Rate it! 1-5 stars!

As Always:

To spread the love of books, I will gift TWO copies of the book club pick each month. Just comment on any book post and/or on @sarahtakesabreather on Instagram so that I know you are following and interested! I’ll randomly choose the winners during the first few days of each month.
