Rapid Book Review
This is going to be a lightning round of a book review post so that I can catch back up!
The Sarah Finds a Deal book club pick for August/September was From the Jump by Lacie Waldon. This was my second Waldon book to read (the first being The Layover) and I can say that I am a fan of her!!! Read our group book discussion HERE!!!
My favorite book of the month was Thank you for Listening by Julia Whelan. Whelan is my very favorite narrator to listen to on audible, so when she releases her own book (which is not often) I jump on it! This one did not disappoint! The story is about a famous actor who, after an awful accident, thinks she no longer “looks the part” of an actress. She becomes a successful audio book narrator and we follow her adventures from there. There is self doubt, betrayal, family drama, romance, self discovery, loss and triumph. I just loved it!
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin was another win for me! I don’t know if I would have picked it up if #bookstagram hadn’t have hyped it up for me, so shout out to all the #booksta people out there! This is a coming of age story about friendship and self discovery. Sam and Sadie meet and become fast friends passing many hours playing video games together in a hospital game room. Several years later they lose touch after a misunderstanding/possible betrayal. When the 2 are in college their paths cross again and they become business partners designing video games. The characters were all so likable and relatable that I just flew through the book. There is a bit of abuse and mental illness so this is your heads up on those sensitive subjects.
I was excited for Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood because I adored The Love Hypothesis last year. Kudos to Hazelwood for another book promoting women in STEM! It’s your classic enemies to lovers/workplace romance and it checks all the right boxes. Swoon-worthy male lead? Check! Quirky main character? Check! Friends that you’d like to have as your own? Check! Family drama? Check! Happily ever after? Well, we sure hope so! Such a fun read! Highly recommend!
Next, I read the heavily anticipated, Carrie Soto is Back, by one of my very favorite authors, Taylor Jenkins Reid. I reeeeeally wanted to love this book but I just couldn’t get past how abrasive the main character was. Carrie is a retired pro tennis player who comes out of retirement to reclaim her title. I wanted so badly for her to be humble and kind as well as successful but she just wasn’t. There is a love story woven in there and a sweet father/daughter relationship, but overall it was a bust for me.
